Sync regions

When you create a remote vault through Obsidian Sync your data is encrypted and stored on one of Obsidian's regional Sync servers. This guide explains how to move your Sync vault to a different regional server.

Available regions

The following regions are available with Obsidian Sync. We recommend using Automatic or choosing a location close to you to reduce latency and make the syncing process faster.

Sync regions

Automatic: Your data center is chosen based on your IP location, at the time when you first set it up.

Asia: Singapore
Europe: Frankfurt, Germany
North America: San Francisco, USA
Oceania: Sydney, Australia

Change Sync region

To change your remote vault's region, you will need to recreate your vault on a different Sync server. Note you can also change regions by using the Upgrade Sync encryption migration assistant, if your remote vault is on an older version.

Migrations are destructive

Always back up your vault before proceeding with a migration.

When you migrate a remote vault your data will be replaced. This means:

  1. Remote data will be removed from Obsidian servers, and vault data will be re-uploaded in its place.
  2. All version history for the vault will be lost.

Disconnect from a remote vault

  1. Open Obsidian's Settings.
  2. Select Sync in the sidebar.
  3. Click the Disconnect button next to Remote vaults.

You are now disconnected from the remote vault and are no longer syncing on this device.

If you are on the Standard Plan, you will also need to delete your remote vault before proceeding.

Create a new remote vault

  1. Open Settings.
  2. In the sidebar, select Sync.
  3. Next to Remote vault, select Choose.
  4. Select Create new vault.
  5. In Vault name, enter the name of the remote vault.
  6. In Region, choose your server region for your remote vault.
  7. In Encryption password, choose a password for your vault. This creates an end-to-end encrypted vault. The vault password is separate from your Obsidian account and can be different for each of your vaults. For more information, refer to Security and privacy.
  8. Select Create.

Additionally, you can delete your old remote vault once you have confirmed transition to your new remote vault and its region.
